PLACES PEOPLE LIVE
China is a very old country. Some of the cities and villages are over 1000 years old!
The cities used to have walls around them to protect the people inside. You can still see the walls in some places.

Hutongs are the name for old neighborhoods full of houses, courtyards, shops, and just about everything else you can think of. They are usually 1 or 2 stories tall and built around yards that allow people to have space to be outdoors and have gardens and some fresh air. The word 'hutong' means a lane or alley. The gray-tiled houses and deep alleys crossing with each other sometimes seem like a maze. Here are some pictures.
There are not many hutongs left, they are being replaced with tall apartment buildings that can hold many more people.
Many people in large cities live in blocks of apartment buildings that look like this: Whole families often live in 1 or 2 rooms, but they have running water and electricity - most of the hutongs do not have that.

Could you find your way home in these apartment blocks?
Outside of the big cities people live in villages, both large and small. Villages are usually in the middle of farming areas and are places where people can live in large family groups. Each village has a market and places to buy things people need.

Houses are arranged in square compounds in most rural areas. The inside of the square is open and provides a place for animals, a place to keep supplies and household items safe, and a place for children to play. In ancient times the compound protected the people inside from attacks.
